Language / Dziewczyna i koń.... Dziewczynka i pies [22]

that's more great advice..thanks for that, much appreciated.

'w' means 'in' so you need it to say 'woman in automobile' otherwise you'll say woman automobile although you still might be understood...

Nitka, thanks for your comments.

understanding what you are saying if you you the correct case for "samochod".

thanks for the advice. I asked one of my Polish friends last weekend about this, and he said normally, only young school children would pronounce the "W".

UK, Ireland / Michael Palin visits Poland tonight. [19]

For UK viewers, Michael Palin visits Poland tonight in his "New Europe" documentary. He sets out from Gdansk in the north to the Slovakian boarder in the South, visiting Auschwitz,Czestochova and Warsaw. Should be very interesting. ( BBC 1 at 9 o'clock, repeated Wednesday BBC 4 8 o'clock)

Vincent, you may find this website very useful.

Yes, thanks Arkady, that site will be very useful in the future.

I typed that short statement into it, and I think I can hear a very short sound before samochodzie. It is very faint, and is very hard to hear.That brings me to my next question.

I wonder if a foriegn person said "kobieta samochodzie" ( without the "w" )
to a Polish person, would he/she still be understood? or does that very faint "W" make a lot of difference. I do know that its there in the written word, and would never be left out.

Thanks Arkady, I was listening for a "v" sound at first and then when you said "f" I remembered that the w changes to f sometimes. However I have just played it several times again, it still seems like it is being missed out.

Maybe the recording is wrong, or like you said, its very faint, then again I might be going deaf. :) Thanks once again for your help and, it's much appreciated.

The only truely silent letter I have found so far is the (barred) L in jablko.
There must be a few more waiting to pounce on me.

Yes I read somewhere that there are no silent letters in Polish, but I am starting to think different now :)

Thanks, Michal for the info. At the time, I was looking at a text book and it did not have a difference between girl and girlfriend, just quoted Dziewczyna for both.

Language / Dziewczyna i koń.... Dziewczynka i pies [22]

If these two statements are correct, why is there a "k" in the second spelling of Dziewczyna? I assume both horse and dog are masculine words. Also is there a difference in the polish spelling of girl and girlfriend. Thanks

Language / Can anyone help with spelling of Grandmother [53]

Babcia = Grandmother (pronounced: Bob-cha)

I wonder why she pronounced Bab like Bob? I would have thought the "a"would have been pronounced as "a". So confusing this polish language :)

Language / The final "ę" [29]

It sounds unnatural if you pronounce "ę" at the end of a Polish word - you should just stick to "e."

Well I think it's very confusing for a beginner trying to master Polish words, when all these language courses, conflict with each other.
Today I was listening to another audio source and They were pronouncing the "ę" on the end. I have heard the words "Dziękuję"and"Proszę" spoken in so many various ways, that, I'm not sure how it should be said any more?

If there are any native Polish speakers reading this, and would spare their time, could you please point out what other letters, ( if any ) change at the end of a word. It would be very helpful to myself and any other beginners. Thanks for any help.

the ones that I have found so far are..

b=p
d=t
g=k
v=f if "v" is used in foreign word.

Language / The final "ę" [29]

I have read that an "ę" in the middle of a word is pronounced "en" ( sometimes "em" ) and at the end of a word just as ordinary e. However I was watching a Polish language video this morning and, a lady said Dzie-ku-jen and her male companion said Dzie-ku-ja.

It is a bit confusing and I wondered if there are any cases when the final "ę" is pronounced "en" as I have also heard it with the word "się" a few times. Just to make it a bit more complicated there are lots of words in the Polish dictionary ending in "e" and "ę" Thanks to anyone who may help.
