Language / Share Perfective and Imperfective Polish verbs [105]

And you can have perfective future and perfective past (but not present as it's a done thing)

Iść - to go is a wonderful verb in all it's shapes.

Food / Polish National Dish [54]

BTW, Carp = crap (sorry)

LOL - a friend of mine, Gosia (Polish btw...) doesn't do the Carp thing either, on account of her childhood memories of her mum getting live carp, getting to know them as, er pets, and then having to eat them at christmas time....

Language / Learnign Polish...any tips!? [33]

Hmmm, I have been studying Polish for a couple of years now. I use many different courses. Polish is tough. To learn Polish, you have to put in the work. Every day. Study. (Rather like being at school I suppose)

But Polish is such a cool language!

You will find a good coruse, free to download here:

UK, Ireland / Three more Polish males lose lives on Irish roads [18]

I think it is largely the left hand / right hand driving issue - there have been a few accidents like the Kerry one.
A momentary lapse of concentration.

I've done it myself, driving on the continent - I went the wrong way round a roundabout once.
And through the wrong side of a junction on another occasion.

Can never be careful enough on the road.

RIP

Language / Share Perfective and Imperfective Polish verbs [105]

sometimes there's not much resemblence to each other in English verbs as well

Ah, but i'm used to the English verbs, lol

Włożyć - wkładać (To put on)
Zdjąć - zdejmować (To take off)

These unsimilar perfective/imperfective verbs are melting my brain!
There are so many of them...

Language / Parallel texts - a useful learning resource? [7]

Here's one i found a while back: odur.let.rug.nl/~houtzage/poldownloadsmp3.html

It has a few readings in Polish downloadable as mp3 files and parallel texts of the readings in English and Polish. I think that the sounds recordings make this quite useful.

Language / Who wants a Linguaphone Polish Course...? [30]

The courses are very well put together and include comprehensive sounds recordings - the idea being that you learn to speak with a correct accent from the start and soak up the language then as you go along...

... that's the theory anyway!

Language / Who wants a Linguaphone Polish Course...? [30]

In the past there has been much discussion on PF about the best Polish language courses and on what is available.
I think that the old Linguaphone courses are amongst the best, tough to come by.

I haven't seen one available anywhere for a while.
Currently there are two on offer on ebay!

...worth a look for any English speaker who's serious about learning Polish...

Language / Accusative Case [44]

Does that look like the start of a great work of Polish literature or just the ramblings of a retard?

Hmm, a bit of both really :)
Osioł is not listed in my grammar book. so it must be reasonably regular in it's declension, (hence my suggestions above)

what we need is...., a polish person to assist us!

Language / Accusative Case [44]

Have I got the accusitive plural (in bold, to make it easier to spot) right or wrong?
Help!

Hm, would it not maybe be (Acc sing) Osioł, (Acc pl) Ośły?
er, I'll have to go and look this up now lol, homework

Language / Share Perfective and Imperfective Polish verbs [105]

Heh heh, my favourite perfective/imperfective verb pairs are the ones that bear no resemblence to each other at all, at least not to my non-polish senses,

for example:
kłaść (imp) włożyć (pf) = to put.
brać, wziąć

go polish, go :) gives us something to study....

Language / Polish Soaps? & They Really do use Rosetta Stone [13]

You can find Polish subtitles at this web site for many current tv programs and also some movies.

hatak.pl/index2.php?page=42

They are all directly downloadable.
We can pretend we're studying then by watching something with PL subtitles :)

Language / Best learning Polish CD/DVD set? [11]

Hi.
Rosetta Stone is quite a good place to start - it is composed of basic words, moving onto simple sentences all in polish.
There are pictures to indicate what is happening and the user learns by trial and error, like real life! It should give him a good start in Polish, and he will be able to start speaking early on. It is however a basic course and should be considered as a starting point. Being speak and repeat lessons he will acquire correct pronounciation also.

Worth considering.

Language / Polish Grammar In A Nutshell [19]

Phew! Good to know I'm not the only one who does this ;)

LOL - I printed two copies of this big one. I use it all the time for reference.

The grammar in a nutshell is a smaller friendlier grammar book - good for light reading...
