Ok, the scientific explanation, certain words in Polish, including foreign loanwords are "masculine" by nature but end in the letter a. As we all know words ending in a in Polish take "feminine" endings. Aren't grammar rules wonderful!

You need to see the written word as associated with the spoken word of course. It works though.
The only letter I significantly don't hear properly is j which I would sometimes hear as y or maybe i.

Hey LC, I sympathize.

Polish is really tough.
I've been at it exactly 5 years now (My God!) and it wasn't until year 2 that I really began to find my way around it.

Try and listen to audio a lot, to get your ear in.
One big advantage is that once you can pronounce the words you will find that you can spell them. Polish is spelt exactly as it sounds.

You'll find loads of help here of course.

You are quite mistaken. The current and immediate past situation in Northern Ireland has little to do with religion, it is more related to the political aspirations of Unionists and Nationalists (google each term - there's a vast amount of info available on them) and to previous discriminations of Unionists against Nationalists.

Everyone's at peace now, so there should certainly be no problems for a Polish person in Northern Ireland, regardless of religion.

Of course there's always the looney fringe who want trouble, but you get those in every country - they're all the same, but with different excuxes.

Is it possible to get her some polish books appropriate to her age? If she had some (funny for example) stories to read in her own language it might allow her to calm down a bit and not feel so lost. Then she might begin to interact with the others.

If there were any other polish children in the school that she could communicate with it might also set her at ease a little.

I agree, Teach Yourself Polish isn't great.
May I suggest the course here:
polish.slavic.pitt.edu/firstyear/lessons
It's a free download.
Grab all of the other bits too - a dictionary and grammar book in particular, plus sounds files:
polish.slavic.pitt.edu

The course starts you at the beginning and should keep you going for a good while. If it get too tough then it hasn't cost anything to try it, and sure work at your own pace :)

You're right, of course - much the same as Dublin, only on a larger scale. Perhaps I just had built up a high expectation of POSK and it's immediate area.

I used to live for a time in London in the nineties, near one of the er "Irish areas." ;)
