Life / Poland: The Things That Make Foreigners Lift a Brow [123]

and shoving in queues was a bit extreme sometimes (but no where near as bad as the legendary Paris equivalent).

I remember when my son was small and in a stroller and I couldn't believe the number of people who would practically push us out of the way or off the sidewalk! Here you would end up eating a knuckle sandwich!

Life / Poland: The Things That Make Foreigners Lift a Brow [123]

One of the things that I think make foreigners lift their brow is not knowing where in the world they will find the handle on the toilet??? It can be in anyone of a number of places in Poland. Here in the US - you just know where it is and can find it in the dark if necessary!

Travel / How much money would I need for 2 weeks in Europe... [5]

it depends on where you're going - comparatively, Poland is relatively cheap if you go the Polish route - Imported products cost just about what they do here - for example a liter of Pepsi is 1.00 either here or there. But -(and please don't jump on me) in my opinion, England is VERY expensive (I've heard the same about Spain too but haven't been there). But I guess it's the same everywhere - if you know where to go and what to buy you can do it on a budget. When we go to Poland for 2 weeks, we take about $1,000.00 in cash but we don't stay in hotels (with husband's family) and although we eat out frequently the restaurants are very cheap but we also always have some of the family with us. We do bring back a lot of souviners though.

Food / Good Polish Wines [74]

I was always wondering why Poland did have a good wine industry - is it the weather, the land or something else? Almost all "old" countries drank wine in the Middle Ages and cooked with it as well (no refridgeration - it killed the taste of bad meat) but did Poland?

Study / Comparing Educational Standards in Poland vs other countries [88]

what they were taught (many years after me) is roughly comparable to my degree but is more advanced than the Maths degrees in the UK today.

That is exactly what I mean. I think that much more is expected from the students and due to how difficult it is to achieve a place in the University, most students are much more "advanced" .

Genealogy / Polish Silesians? [25]

That's not completely true. There maybe some differences but not that anyone wouldn't understand. I think that it is much more difficult to understand a highlander. I have no trouble understanding my husband and his family who are from around Katowice but I can't understand people from Warsaw - no joke and no offense but they speak SO FAST!

Study / Comparing Educational Standards in Poland vs other countries [88]

I am many years out of school (yes that means that I am old :) but from what I've seen and heard of the University in Poland - many a USA student would have great difficulties with this type of curriculum! Even the testing to be admitted to the University is very strict

Travel / Traveling to Poland: Tips for First-Timers [47]

There is no reason to be scared - it can still be very different, expecially if you will be staying with a family but it is a great place !

Food / Marinated lotta on a stake? [13]

I've eaten in quite a few polish restaurants and I'd be very wary of any "delicious fish" that was without a name except for "lotta"???!!!

Food / Marinated lotta on a stake? [13]

So, is this lotta on a steak or a stake? If so, I would want to know how big the stake is (if it's too big I don't think I want to eat there - rare or not!

Love / Men attitude towards women in the Polish culture [82]

PS. with the ringing once and hanging up thing, apparently it's just to let you know that they are thinking of you at a particular moment in time. Quite sweet I think!

When I was in Poland last time - I noticed this and they called it "ba,ki". Not sure if they meant bees or the other one :)

but that's what is nice about GG because you can see how the sentences are supposed to be and after a while (a long time in my case) you can catch on a little more

Not sure if this is the right area to post this in but I was wondering if anyone knew how to download more "emoticons" for GG - I just have the ones that were originally downloaded with the program but have seen others with some different ones than I have. Thanks.
