UK, Ireland / What is good about being in the UK? [140]

And is a drunken Briton staggering out of a pub really that much worse than a group of Polish losers huddling up against a fence with a few bags of Tyskie? A drunk's a drunk!

I have much better opinion of Polish drunks than of English ones ;P ;P
(well I don't mean the younger generation of Poles who I am personally affraid of)

But will anyone understand the words?? mnamananamanana sugar hiccup :)

it's not the words you are supposed to enjoy, stupid :P ;)

ok I am pulling your leg here (and there) ;)

Life / Large Polish cities with the fewest # of native english speakers? [15]

I think Rzeszów and Białystok - this is an educated guess ;) (bless my education ;) - these are quite big cities but not so much cultural centres - perhaps some (but not all) Silesian cities can fit here as well - you should ask Seanus - our regular contributor :) perhaps Bielsko-Biała is also a place to have a look at

You can also consider making research on Płock and Grudziądz (both are above 100 000 inhabitants) Płock is known in Poland for the biggest crude refinery in the nation - so it is sort of on the richer side

all of these don't come from my personal experience - just general knowlegde and 'educated guessing' (based on culture, popularity among Poles etc) - so better wait for some more informed reports

as to put some more peaceful tones into the argument which is actually as stupid as calling each other names - just listen to 'Victorialand' by Cocteau Twins - I recommend 'How to bring blush to the snow' :) Enjoy.

I think I should have added that it is readily available from youtube
just listen to Elisabeth Fraser and enjoy :):):)

well it is not me who is using these - it's average Briton's vocabulary - I have some sympathy toward the Irish and am quite indifferent to Pakistanis in Britain (they have their quirks and some have vices but many of them are good sincere people - I have had experience with both kinds even if it was little experience)

I can't say anything on behalf of the Polish nation - but I personally would not mind if you insist on keeping your culture (as long as your culture doesn't involve throwing up or ****ing on my threshold or chucking empty beer bottles at my windows) - I don't mind other people being different - and hell you can moan as much as you like about Poland - my personal stance is it is often practical to listen to moans cause there can be some reasonable points there (hidden) - but getting emotional about the moans doesn't serve anything

Arrogance - oh well - you really like strong words - be it your way

if you want strong words I'd say the British are bread as cattle (and most like it that way) - they really love this superiority thing - it's oh so fun to take **** of some stupid Paddys, Pakis (or whatever) - when it turns out that the lack of skill and ambition is on their side (which results in them not having jobs) they just throw tantrums

I STRONGLY disagree that she is not a moaner.

She is simply attention seeking with these threads and titling them "The sad life of a Polish migrant" is just looking to be negative and in my opinion frankly stupid.

The only reason she wrote a list of good things is because I made this thread in counter to hers (immature as it may have been however she did not even attempt to present a cohesive argument when I challenged her on her points in her threads in fact she wrote something so stupid the mods removed this) and without it she would have said nothing.

This was a knee jerk reaction to try and claw back some popularity from people on her part and I think that this much is obvious!

home grown psychologist heheh
or a mind reader - but I don't believe in materialist mind readers

But after the above statement, would you really be surprised to encounter resentment? What makes YOUR generation think that you are so much better than my parents and grandparents generation, as they felt it was essential to integrate in their new country, but your generation doesn't?

it is our choice simply - why should I actually blend in if I don't want to - btw there is really little value in what you can blend into in English culture right now - binge culture? pretty moronic don't you think - going out culture? (it's expensive you know) - what is left then - religion? tradition? - not much that there is there - main Christmas tradition is to get pissed on the Boxing day - hardly anything one should really pursue

Do you see the Chinese, Indian, Pakistani people in general blending in?? yes - those who are borne and raised here

"If you don't like pickled eggs pack your bags and get out!"?

well your wording was sort of if you don't like it here go back

the thing is the British want us to share our views of their country and then get so very offended if these are not enthusiastic enough - strange don't you think

News / NEW PATRIOT MISSILES FOR POLAND [178]

does softball count - cause I played it once - and imagine I actually was able to hit the ball and make one base for a start the other Pole who hit the next ball allowed me to go to the home base :P - sledz there was an amateur baseball league in Poland - true it didn't turn popular - now for Polish conditions this was pretty expensive sport (all of the gear had to be imported) - and I don't think baseball bats became popular because of the league :P

News / NEW PATRIOT MISSILES FOR POLAND [178]

Ther baseball man you are talking about is a frustrated, disoriented criminal. I take that you want to say that he is a hardened criminal. In such a case right justice would be through use of force. Prison, even the death-penalty.

yes I think he is a 'recydywa' and doesn't really like to change his ways - you haven't really answered who do you see as the policeman in this scenario - if there are no police we need to defend ourselves don't we

Poland signed the deal knowing that it may antagonise Russia. Now America is striking a meaningful dialogue with Russia so how does that make Poland look?

I don't know what you mean by 'meaningful' here - America is just making concessions to Russia for their support (perhaps trade embargo) in dealing with Iran

someone quite recently pointed out in Polish weblogs that what Americans (and the NATO) are doing in Afghanistan now is actually protecting Russia from the spread of militant islam if anything else - ok let's say Americans are funding Americas huge military industry sector at the expense of strengthening Russia's geopolitical position

why don't we let the islamist extremism spread into Russia - let them deal with it
btw Russians are more than glad to have nuke reduction cause they would scrap some of their ageing arsenal anyway

News / NEW PATRIOT MISSILES FOR POLAND [178]

He needs justice. Policeman must be there.

say you are the guy with a wallet and Russia is the guy with the baseball - who do you think the policeman should be then - do you see any volunteers?

To protect ourselves we must be friends to everyone. We must win hearts with love, we must do justice with everyone.

are you suggesting that we should make friends with all those shaved heads with baseball bats? well it surely is an interesting/intriguing idea but I would insist you show us an example of yourself (be the change you want to see yes?)

News / NEW PATRIOT MISSILES FOR POLAND [178]

We dont need missiles. We need peace.

tell it to the guy with a baseball bat who asks for your wallet - well perhaps you can still have peace after parting with it - but are you sure you will?

Life / GERMANS LIVING IN POLAND vs POLES LIVING IN GERMANY [30]

The winner got it all and decided to be done with the "non-fitting" Silesians...

well this is true
but doesn't show how the mix took place
and it wasn't always peaceful and in the spirit of cooperation and common respect of the nations involved

Life / GERMANS LIVING IN POLAND vs POLES LIVING IN GERMANY [30]

I can't help our definitions of Silesian ethnos differ (I will not let my (Polish) definition go)
To me Germans living in Upper Silesia were just Germans
this is true that Silesians (in the Polish meaning of the word) were heavily influenced by German state and culture - this is to some extent the reason for their separateness

but those who eventually adopted the German language as their own and then consequently German culture were just simply Germans in my view
Maybe in the German eyes they were different enough from other Germans to call them some particular term (be it die Schlesier or whatever)

Life / GERMANS LIVING IN POLAND vs POLES LIVING IN GERMANY [30]

Silesia got repopulated by eastern Poles and others who lost their homes in what is now western Ukraine, true bred Poles.

have you ever been to Upper Silesia - Katowice, Chorzów, Bytom, Ruda Śląska, Rybnik, Jastrzębie??
it is true that hundred of thousands of Poles from outside of Silesia came and settled there - but autochtonous population still remains strong there and they keep their dialect and culture

Interesting....a Volksliste Silesian....

no BB - Wilmowski was of German speaking family from Upper Silesia (you see not all of them were forced to leave - one could easily guess from Wilmowski case thousands and thousands stayed

Life / GERMANS LIVING IN POLAND vs POLES LIVING IN GERMANY [30]

in Poland ethnic minorities are privileged as for parliamentary rights - they don't need to exceed the 5 per cent threshold to get their representatives into the Sejm - one or two "German minority" representatives can possibly be very influential

these leads to some absurds - Polish courts don't allow Society of Silesian (not German) National Minority to be created on grounds there is no such nation - which is very patronizing judgement - the thing is if minorities have such rights (be it national or any other) - the actual reason is if the courts would allow any national minority societies to be created many fringe factions would go for it and get elected which would hugely affect politiacal scene -

btw I think it is quite reasonable to think of Silesians as a separate ethnos especially when a considerable percentage of them perceive it this way (I guess it is about 15 per cent - still it will be much more of them then the so-called 'German minority' - ok I am overdismissive about German minority in Poland (but won't go into the details here)

this is a fair point

Life / GERMANS LIVING IN POLAND vs POLES LIVING IN GERMANY [30]

only recenly there are 2 Polish people in German parliament - but both represent regular political parties

and to be really precise there's no significant German minority in Poland - those who claim being Germans have mostly ambiguous identity and that's it (and they were awarded special rights for claiming German ancestry or German citizenship (by both German and Polish ))

there were already discussions about German minority in Poland (especially upper Silesia) on this forum - of course there was no real consensus - the fact is most people lack basic knowledge (I live in the area so I can tell a couple of things about this and that)

btw German official sources claim an estimate of German minority in Poland to be around a million - they must have high ceilings in German offices you might think

History / Secret grave of Polish hero 'discovered' [22]

Seanus - the simplest thing - you can ask most people older than 30 who gen. Świerczewski was - and they will tell you (more or less precisely and elloquently) - and perhaps 15 per cent of most history conscious Poles will know who gen Fieldorf was and what was his story

History / Secret grave of Polish hero 'discovered' [22]

I'm surprised that, in a country which tends to honour its national heroes, they could neglect a true legend.

you miss a point here Seanus - the point that the country has divided heritage - do you think that those who ran this country for 50 years just vanished, didn't communist ruling class include journalists, lawyers, scientists (including historians) etc etc. Wasn't there a massive secret service to control the population?

History / Did Ukraine really "steal" Polish land? [302]

if it doesnt then the next best thing is Poland.

next best things will be EU in the eyes of most Belarussians and Ukrainians and not Poland - an educated guess

Thats a very good point, and i never said about incorporation or annexation, i'm merely saying that Belarus and Ukraine are prone to upheavals that Russia might or might not have resources to deal with, if it doesnt then the next best thing is Poland.

Food / Mushroom Picking Parties (Poland tradition) [74]

i think this is what japanese call Shiitake (looks like that to me) - I have never seen them here but have heard that people buy their spores and plant them on some trunks in the wild to pick them later - maybe they go wild then and spread around Rakky

it is as much as overestimated - many of these people are baptised catholics and that's it - only go to church about couple occasions a year or in a lifetime

News / The Lisbon Treaty and land reperations [74]

what do you hold for legitimate - was murder of milions of Polish citizens (including almost 3 million ethnic Poles legitimate - was their slave labour legitimate - do you think it was ever fairly compensated for by the German state - I take the seizure of German property after the war as means of compensation (though many who settled there were actually stripped of property in the East) - it's not the Poles who can't bury the past and go on - you should know for example that any reprivatisation legislation is blocked in Poland because of the danger of German claims to the land - the European Tribunal cannot deal with the past legislation (the legislation before it came to existence) but any new legislation can be sued if it discriminates on grounds of nationality, citizenship - and used by the progeniture of the expelled Germans to their advantage

News / The Lisbon Treaty and land reperations [74]

The United Kingdom and Poland have interpretations of the treaty as described in their attached protocol. The protocol limits justiciability of the charter in UK and Poland.

Czech republic is also negotiating an opt out from the Charter in order to avoid that Germans expelled from Czechoslovakia after WWII could claim property back.

Klaus wants the same rights as Poland and UK ... Poland and UK have negotiated it for different reasons... czechs haven't done it - Klaus wants to change it.

and when Poland was trying to push the 'population square root voting power' through for the Lisbon agreement they would't back us (though it was in their own interest as well) - Polish side managed to have some opt-out as for Basic Rights Charter (I have no idea if this is enough to stop the Germans from getting back of their properties left in Poland) - now the Czech side has to stand for their own interests - it's a moan yes - but I do wish the Czechs luck with that

You saw that DariuszTelka is from Norway, did you?

he just happens to live in Norway (perhaps because he moved there to find a job)
he clearly stated his family lived in Poland after the war and also that his ancestors were of German ethnic origin
and yes I am against giving back property (or compensating for it) to the Germans or those who signed the Volksdeutsche list

Your grandparents and mine chose their side and lost...we have to pay and take it like men, period!
It could be much worse!

and Bratwurst is unusually reasonable here
