Language / Polish grammar exercises from hell [130]

But it's something different it's a indefinite numeral... anyways I wasn't talking about these differences.. ; ) Just about 2 ludzie which you wrote earlier..

Where have I said anything about trzech ludziach? Beside you guys constantly write 3,2 people, use words instead of numbers because it's slightly misleading.. "o trzech osobach" is perfectly fine Seanus, I never said it isn't...

You said "2 ludzie" and I wrote about all possible meaning of "2" in here because you hadn't specified that. And I added that you can't say "dwaj ludzie" because that's what my dictionary said. But in the next post I called it off - I wasn't sure the dictionary was correct.. have you read my previous posts at all? Beside I wasn't addressing your post only. I was commenting on the whole "ludzie" + numerals problem..

Both dwaj ludzie and dwóch ludzi is correct.

Any idea why different dictionaries describe it differently?

Osobach would be when you have 3 people doing different things.

I've checked in few dictionaries and as I said earlier they all say that collective numerals plus "osoby" is incorrect - for example dwoje osób.. and so on.. You can't put everything into colloquial speech.. If I remember correctly this thread is about proper correct polish not about far fetched colloquial speech, that's why we are trying here to get to the proper way of speaking and writing.

"Wielki słownik poprawnej polszczyzny" (Great dictionary of correct polish ) disagrees.. : o
although I'm not really sure, it's strange, because "dwóch" + genetive is correct so why not "dwaj" + nominative..

Ordinal (1st, 2nd, 3rd etc) and cardinal (1, 2, 3 etc) are the terms, frd.

Nope, "liczebnik zbiorowy" is called "collective numeral" in english. Anyway I have to agree with you :). I just checked and you can say dwóch/trzech/czterech ludzi if you are talking about a group of males. You say dwoje/troje/czworo ludzi when you are talking about a mixed gender group ( males and females or females and children or males and children ).

You can't say "2 ludzie" because it's grammaticaly incorrect. You can say "dwóch ludzi"/"dwoje ludzi" or "dwie osoby". You can't use "liczebniki zbiorowe" with osoby - fi "dwoje osób"/"pięcioro osób" etc.

Sorry for misleading you.

Life / What is the nature of Polish people's hygiene? [76]

Anyone who will work hard will have sweat.

That's a little bit far fetched, manual workers surely will.. but that doesn't mean that intellectual work isn't hard work..

Poor hygiene is a trait of people who are dead lazy, you'll find this kind of breed anywhere you go.. not just Poland..

You can use so called "liczebniki zbiorowe" (collective numbers?) - that is dwoje, troje, you can't use ordinary numbers (I dunno if they are called ordinary numbers, but that's what springs to my mind right now ;) they are usually called just numbers ) such as dwóch, trzech.

And you can't use it with "ludzie" only with ludzi.
for instance
dwoje ludzi, troje ludzi, czworo ludzi, dziesięcioro ludzi.
You can't use it with ordinary numbers just as you can't say "dwa cukry" and so on, because these are uncountables, you can say "dwie grupy ludzi" :)

And why is that?

Ludzie is uncountable, you can't use an uncountable with a number.. osoba is countable..

Language / Directory of Polish slang and common phrases [in Polish] [28]

hmm, I mean, "pipa" is a really rarely used word.. and I could see it used between a couple, but it's still strange to call somebody like that, especially in the lovey dovey sweet atmosphere.. it just doesn't fit. Though, it could be used in some chaffy jokingly manner..

UK, Ireland / Sad life of a Polish migrant in UK. Ch. 3 - Food [93]

Food products may be worse, or maybe good quality of these is harder to find. But I think that various dishes in UK are actually better/ more interesting/ varied than most of bland dishes in Poland. On the other the best food is probably Asian food..

Constantally complaining that things are better back in Poland.

People constantly moan about how things were better back in their youth everywhere around the world. The reason is that everything is better and brighter and greener when you are young. It's not a polish trait. It's a privilege of an old age, that's why young ones should have the courtesy not to moan. It's not connected with your living place or country you come from. It's the carefreeness that many people miss in their lifes.

Language / Gwara Śląska [24]

ohh.. now I get it :D I thought you wanted these words to get translated to Silesian :P

Pretty popular Z word is zicnij/zitcnij - that is - sit down..
fi.
Zicnij se tutej fater. - Sit here father. :)

You also might have heard "zimniok" somewhere because many poles from across the whole Poland know word "ziemniak", silesian equivalent is nearly the same..

I didn't know what you wanted with these English words, I reckon there is no "yellow" word in silesian.. I thought you wanted their Silesian counterparts ; o

anyways, we can just link some kind of a Silesian dictionary here, I though you're here for some conversation :p

Wow. this list is much more complicated than the previous one I don't know many of these words:

fajrant - generally end of work - free time, but is also used "zrobić coś za fajrant" - to do something for free or for a very small sum of money

heft - notebook
izdebka/izba - room
jeronie - something like "damn it", I also heard "jiżynie/jeżynie" version...
podzim - I'm pretty sure that's a name of a season but I'm not sure if it's before or after winter ; )

tacik - dad.. but I know that most people use "fater"...
utropa - I'm not sure of that but I'd be guessing it's worry'
waserwoga - something with water.. but I have no idea what :)
zany - if it's a naun then it's "gupielok" a Silesian classic, and probably most often used word in that "silesian" comedy show about "Bercik".. ; )

I have no idea about the rest...

Life / Poland not so cheap anymore!! [47]

Well.. I don't really trust anything anymore, I dunno what have been gm'ed and what haven't. All these strawberries look too much alike and take too much time to stall, hence I smell something's fishy. In good old days strawberries were getting too old pretty quickly so you had to eat them just after buying them. Now they look the same after a week or two in the fridge... dodgy stuff

Strawberries

Isn't it like that everywhere? If the crops were good for farmers, if the year was good then prices will be lower. Since every year and season greatly waries in here than those prices are also changing rapidly..

News / Daffy and Donald aka Lech and Jarosław Kaczyński together on tape, thoughts? [26]

don't tell me about Polish courts

Maybe in case of your average Kowalski, but not in Politicans cases - when Ziobro had his trials his mates from PiS would have noticed any offence that could have occured, they would have publicise it... nothing happaned therefore I reckon that the trial was fair.

But I'm all with you on unfair justice system for an average polish citizen. All those codices have various flaws - that allow people to break law without being punished.

Polish verb zabić - does not necesarily mean to murder frd - so the thing was perhaps gross exaggeration but not a blatant lie, doctor G refused to operate a couple of people for no financial 'share' from their side as well as did not do proper treatment in some cases for the same reason.

I know one thing - the outcome of the court case. Mr Ziobro lost big time. I guess the court know the only proper version of word zabić.

they all lie

I agree. But I can't agree with PiS being any different than the others. I'm pretty sure all these parties have their share of wrong doing liers.

- you must be joking

I am not joking. Most politicans know how to control their emotions. Those who are not have to pay the price.

she seemed to have forgotten what she left behind

People quickly forget where they come from and what have they left behind. They get used to the luxury of things they didn't have. And if they are ****** enough they start moaning about discomforts. In poland it is called "Wyżej sra niż dupe ma" it means "He shits higher than where his arse is".

for instance the famous doctor G case, during few interviews he was stating that man's not gonna kill again although there were no clear evidence that he is guilty of a murder. All at all, these charges were dropped. And Ziobro's got accused later of compromising personal goods by Doctor G.

(I'm not trying to defend that doc. He is still accused of other things but not of murder).
Anyways whole investigation and trial was started mainly to show how the new toy of Kaczynscy the CBA is important - it turned out that it was all a joke.

He was also accused by many politicians of lieing, especially in Blida's case, in few lower house commision trials he attended ( these trials are usually a parody, a show and a way for a politician to get some voters ) he was always the shiniest star. Although a tad far fetched it says something about a politician.

Beside that he was accused by few other people ( usually of false accusation or slander, from what I know there are few court cases against him right now )...

Come on if somebody is clean as a whistle he doesn't have so many court cases. The only positive thing about him is that he was the hope for law students, he was trying to break the lawyer mafia. So younger lawyers and law students could have an easier start.

Describe the above

the glass if half-full but I'm introvertic anyways.. :(

Don't loose heart Ksysia, we are all praying everyday for you in Poland, try to live somehow in that dreaded mad country where dogs are barking with their arses, be the shining beacon, be strong and never back down even if the water in the toilet isn't flushing in the right direction. Even if you can't buy a proper bułka just those tasteless toast bread ( barf ). And keep on taking these sedatives, please keep us entertained.

That's easy, they do things that they need to do to get more power even if they are doing something that stands against their outlook and policies. Example: fraternising with dodgy lot, people like Lepper or Giertych and their parties although these people were everything that was contrary to Kaczyński's policies - thugs, cons and neonazis. Why did they lost the trust of voters, exactly because of that, I know few people who were into PiS but after all that they changed their party, after watching blokes such as Ziobro spouting lies just to make some more media hype.

:)
I'm not saying I'm against everything what PiS has done, but I think the party would need another leader. I actually liked Dorn... but I guess he was to open minded for PiS..

Yeah sure they defend polish values, they wage war when somebody calls them a potato.. they are little schemers with giant egos and they are cultivating dity politics, war mongering, and forging false arguments against their enemies.

All the "defending" polish values by critisizing homosexuality and abortion is just a facade to get more voters. Nothing more.

Life / Polish speed cameras [37]

Sometimes they work some times they don't. I got a picture of me taken few weeks ago driving 70 when there was a 40 speed limit. It was at 3 pm not a living soul on the road or anywhere, I actually knew there was this speed limit there just forgot about it in the heat of an argument.

Beside that there was a camera in one part of my city where people usually speed up because there 3 lanes in each direction - it's in the middle of the city so there a natural 50km limit ; ) They put this camera there and from what I heard the camera did depleted 1000 photos limit in an hour ;) They uninstalled it on the next day.
