Language / Two questions for people who learn polish [57]

Don't shy away from translated stuff. Many cultures reserve native language literature for smart stuff and outsource the mindless garbage to English speaking countries (which we're very good at producing). But it's the mindless garbage that has the most to teach you in the beginning.

The other bonus to this approach is that you know the story beforehand, so when you're confused you still know what's going on and can thus assume what something means. I know my university's spanish class read Harry Potter in spanish for one of the classes, for example.

Law / Linux, Unix, and Open Source in Poland [119]

Microsoft Update software will block updates to Microsoft application software running in Wine-based environments.

i don't remember an MS update actually changing stuff in MSOffice while i ran it in xp or the couple months I had vista

Ok so I tried this and sorry I haven't changed my mind about Linux

meh, not for everyone ^_^

Food / When did kebab and Vietnamese "bar" come to town? [15]

but I wouldn't describe either of them as 'kebab houses'

the i went to was literally a window in a wall they sold it out of. might have been a door with the bottom half closed, i forget. not a sitdown place, at any rate.

Food / Asian food - is it easy to find in Poland (particularly Lublin)? [39]

noodles tasted like super noodles

what does that mean, exactly? Is that like an instant ramen brand (or that like?)

You can find many 'world foods' such as housin sauces, marinades, bamboo shoots, udon noodles, tortillas etc. Unfortunately, most of these products aren't very cheap because they are usually imported.

I figured I'd have to ween myself off the stuff, still nice to have it every once in a while. Plus I assume making it yourself isn't more $$$ than going to a place and ordering the finished product *shrug*

Viet Nam my friend. I have tried vietnamese places in the UK, Poland, Germany, Slovakia, even Singapore...and it never came close.

IDK about that... I've had some good pho in Little Saigon (think chinatown, but vietnamese) in LA. Hella good pho

I remember there was one (at least) kebob place in old town lublin open at least a year before the whole mad cow scare came around... not sure what year that was, but almost positive thats's pre-2000.

by Vietnamese are we talking phó, sandwiches, full plates or all of the above?

Love / Hot Polish guys photos [73]

There's little attraction for most women to muscles that big. Muscles that show (anti-flabby) are good. Bulging just say obsessive with too much time/steroids/both on his hands.

Food / Polish cake and pastry menu for coffee shop. [37]

UK, Ireland / List of goods taken from living in the UK [64]

if you set it right, it actually does thaw it and warm it but doesn't quite crispify it... so the bread tastes nice and freshly baked. Toast = higher setting

here's a secret to bread...
slice it, freeze it (in a ziplock), toast it when you want it and it tastes bakery fresh
once you know what setting makes it the way you like it you'll be set ^_^

biszkopt is just cake. Think poundcake or any other doughy filler between frosting in store-bought stuff. really not a big deal.
in PL you just add some good stuff to it to get rid of the dryness ^_^

i just looked through picks, that one IS taller than most. Though biszkopt is notorious for using tons of eggs
you're too nice to the kids... i had granny's cakes at 3, I turned out fine ^_^
(in all honesty, unless you're like granny and accidentally spill a good 1/4 bottle onto the thing, the alcohol won't be noticeable, nor will it actually make you drunk/tipsy

Though if you're gonna market them, yeah, might have to think of alternatives (or sell a few specifically as 'spiked cakes' or somesuch to grownups only?)

edit: Here is the url for the recipe the pic came from (claims 7cm)...
uwielbiam.pl/przepisy/przegladanie/biszkopt-tradycyjny.html

hopefully you know enough polish to read the ingredients n' stuff (oddly this one uses less eggs than the ones granny makes. Hers use at least 6 for a good sized cake)

you bake a biszkop

Biszkopt cake from Poland

you cut it up (sorry, couldn't find a pic of adding the liquor to make it moist >_< )

fill it with yummies

make the outside look good

and thus you have a cake

don't forget favorki!
karpatka!
placek makowy (besides makowiec)!

that's really more like biscotti and not a torte unless that's a regional slang or some sort.

biszkopt = the actual baked cake (before you cut it, put filling in it, etc etc.)

My dad was a chef, he made some fantastic torte's but I never see a decent recipe like the ones he made. They were to die for..........

the secret is that you soak the actual cake layers in liquor to moisten them up
granny once made this one great one that I (8 or 9 at the time) was forbidden to have more than a small sliver of at a time due to the % in the thing. ^_^ nice alternative way to get drunk, in my honest opinion

Law / Linux, Unix, and Open Source in Poland [119]

P.S. I think I would be really piszed off if someone wrote all over my computer with a permanent marker :)

And I suggest you read the comments on Youtube as this proves bugger all lol

thus the quotes on the proof... though the indicators on the top and left rulers kinda negate the whole perm marker bit...
didn't read the comments, no

Food / Asian food - is it easy to find in Poland (particularly Lublin)? [39]

Seanus- i was more looking for the ingredients... large tortillas in particular. They make a great way to make a quick breakfast/lunch and have it on the go (scramble some eggs, toss in a few peices of pre-cooked pork/chicken/beef, sprinkle some cheese and wrap it up; eat it while you walk or waiting for the bus).

Life / Question: Illegal Aliens in Poland [17]

defmax asked

Let's say this same foreigner learns that it is possible for him/her to become Polish based on the fact that his/her father's father was Polish and emigrated from Poland in 1910 to the US.

in your example

he was born in Poland and thus was Polish

everyone born in PL gets a pesel and citizenship... ppl born outside pl to pl parents are entitled to it; big difference.

hybrid tablet PC both run really well

forgive me... is that the computer in a touchscreen thing (aka, the complete waste of money)?
If you're going for something that gimmicky (sorry, but I've tried it, that thing is just not practical), you sir shouldn't try linux. Oh, and yes, it can work... you just gotta do a lot of work yourself vs getting a nice package that all you have to do is DL and install for it to work. Once that is done, a quick google search did show programs available for said gimmick... as well as 'proof' of a working version

Life / Facebook - is it popular in Poland? [22]

I thought facebook started with a similar idea in some American university. These things tend to only be successful when they out-grow the original idea.

Yup, I had it back when it was that way. You could only get it if you were in one of a dozen or two colleges (it started with just one...), had to register with your school e-mail in order to get an account and the apps were limited to pics and a profile and a class engine to post your schedule and find people also in that class.

then they did the 'you can invite someone if you're already in' thing, which turned to a 'invite anyone you want' thing and finally a free-for-all which in my opinion ruined the whole thing. You suddenly get all sorts of games filled with 13-yr-olds and the adds change from cool college funnies to stupid all-age-appropriate things and the stupid stocker feed and so on. You have to then be careful of what you post and what you reveal. You get idiots you don't know asking you to befriend them so they could have an advantage in some game or another.

I wish they did keep it just for college kids (excuse the rant)

Life / Question: Illegal Aliens in Poland [17]

how did it get resolve though? Where was he born? From what you said it sounds like the police assumed he was polish thus classified him as such... did they have to back off/apologize or were they proven in the right (ultimately)? Did it turn into mistaken identity (mistaken assumption that he had citizenship) or did it fully play out with his (till then non-existent) polish citizenship intact?

My mom (born and raised in PL) flew to PL with me in 1999 on her US passport (her polish one had expired, I think) and the guy there stamped in

her visa and gave her the 'you can stay for a couple months or need to get a different visa' speech even after being told she had PL citizenship and was simply traveling on her US passport.

Life / Question: Illegal Aliens in Poland [17]

I think you still have to apply for it to make it legal though... and IDK if it would work in the 'crap, I'm caught, now can I have my citizenship?' order. Plus, I would assume you'd have to apply for it in the embassy before going to PL, and have proof that you are indeed of polish decent (AKA, PL has to know you exist to grant you citizenship).

Life / Where to get a cup of coffee in Warsaw? [40]

If a smoking ban is introduced in Poland, I'll just smoke anywhere I want to. If any member of the public says anything to me, I'll just ignore them. Any member of staff will be met with a simple Finnish sentence "Sorry, I do not speak Polish". If they persist, I might admit that I speak English and then apologise profusely for not knowing the local law and then saunter outside to finish my cigarette (which will be pretty much finished by then anyway). I'll be reasonable as long as non-smokers are; if they aren't, I won't be either.

your definition of reasonable is amazing. Really, your friend Adolf would be proud.

But non-smokers don't care about that: they don't care about anybody except themselves; as long as they can take the drugs they like in the atmosphere they like, all is well with the world they inhabit.

So first you're assuming that all those places close only because of the smoking law... then you assume that a non-smoker won't care that his/her favorite hang out place will close and/or that everyone who regularly attends bars/cafe is a smoker

oh, and by atmosphere they like I assume you mean one free of fumes known to cause cancer and just generally be toxic to humans as a species. How silly of us... to not want to be poisoned; how DARE we? After all, smokers everywhere have to suffer enough places with our abhorrent (relatively) clean air!

How dare the many inconvenience the few! How dare the workers not want to be exposed to said fumes for the daily duration of their shifts (they should, after all, be thankful for receiving the fumes without having to buy said cigarettes)! How dare YOU be inconvenienced to step outside for the 2min it takes you to puff away your cigarette!

As a "sometimes" smoker, I never smoke near anyone I care about. I have too much respect for their lungs and their health! In an ideal world, where we all cared more about each other than about ourselves, smoking bans would not be needed as the smokers would CHOOSE to smoke outside out of respect and concern for the non-smokers.

very true.
The ban is needed because individual cafe or bars could not afford to become non-smoking as smokers (as happens with human nature whenever one is told he/she is not allowed to do something) would stay away from such an establishment to avoid the slight inconvenience and thus significantly lower its competitiveness with surrounding smoke-friendly equivalents. Non-smokers with smoking friends would follow said friends (because they are most likely used to being the inconvenienced ones when going out) and thus the influx of non-smokers would not be as large as some would argue. Therefore unless the smoking ban is in effect to level the playing field in some areas there might as well have been an unwritten ban on smoke-free public places due to simple logistics.

News / What is the penalty in Poland for exercising foreign citizenship? [12]

i'm thinking just bring one. travelling with multiple passports may be an issue in itself.

nope, I've never had an issue
I always take my US and my PL one when traveling to PL and back
I'm assuming the post above about breaking the law is what that was talking about. Basically denying your PL citezenship to get out of rough spots with the law.

Foreigners are allowed to drive for a certain time on their country's license by presenting that + passport in PL, from what I'm told. Anyone confirm/deny this?

Life / Where to get a cup of coffee in Warsaw? [40]

not to prolong the sidetopic... but i've yet to see a train where there wasn't at least one smoking car; where was yours? Maybe they just misunderstood or something?

I don't know how it is in Poland, but most cafe I've been to offer food (some offer full-on meals, others just cakes and such). Either way you can always go outside, take 5min to smoke and come back... though the same principle of smoking before/after would seem to work just as well here as it would at a diner *shrug*

Love / Polish wedding customs/traditions? Aussie marrying Polish. [21]

I had the opposite experience... though probably cuz the one in PL (previously posted pics) was at a farmstead where everyone had plenty of room and since all the neighbors were at the wedding, no end time/ time to be quiet by. It literally had dancing on the 3rd day for those who didn't get enough during the first two. I left the first night at 7am and then only because my grandparents needed to sleep.

The one in Chicago they paid extra to keep the open bar open longer, but things ended at 3 or 4 at the latest (I was younger at the time, so don't quite remember when... the bar was open till 2, I know that)
