Food / Food taboo, therapeutic food: Questions about the food culture in Poland [24]

I offered to take the small daughter of a friend to buy ice cream only to be told by daddy that she couldnt eat ice cream because she had a sore throat. Imagine how upset the poor girl was when I did my little 'I got an ice cream, you havent got one, do you want some of my ice cream? Bah, psyc!' dance in front of her.

Travel / Polish rutted roads [9]

As I drive around the 3M I notice melted road surfaces with tire marks strangely disappearing off the road...

It gives the locals the opportunity to blame their bad driving on the condition of the roads. A carefully thought out plan to once again avoid responsibility

I think that it is good to have different opinions.

So do I. It's not so fun taking the p!ss out of people who agree with you

News / Poland: the 51st state of America [119]

that it wouldnt be hard for this 51st state to become true (if only the EU allowed for it hehe)

I would worry about America letting you in before you do the EU letting you out. You know what I mean ;)

Law / Ikea suspends all investments in Poland [35]

Life for the HONEST small business owner is very very difficult in Poland Miranda. I have posted previously about the outragous rent hikes in and around Sopot where it is nigh on impossible for an honest trader to make an honest profit.

As a result, they dont. Businesses are closing. Units are sitting empty and unscrupulous business people are coming in to make a fast buck at other peoples' expense, and then buggering off leaving debts unpaid and others in the lurch

Law / Ikea suspends all investments in Poland [35]

My Polish friend runs a small bussiness and I personally wintessed her refusing to support non-Polish suppliers

Lets not be under any illusions here. Polish small businesses are screwed by the Polish government and Polish landlords, not by non-Polish suppliers.

Law / Ikea suspends all investments in Poland [35]

The 3M IKEA is on the outskirts of the city. In a large commercial development. No idea how easy it is to get to by public transport but the car park is normally full

If Poles dont want to shop at IKEA then they wont. But the IKEAs Ive been to in Poland have been full. With Poles. Spending their money in foreign shops. I wonder what those statistics suggest

Shop ? sucking out money.

Not quite sure what you mean by that. You make it sound almost like IKEA is forcing people to spend their money there. Which would be a typically stupid thing to say.

IKEA in the 3M is always crowded. Always full of Poles. Always happy to spend their money. If not on furniture then on cheap ice cream and hot dogs.

UK, Ireland / Polish workers found hung in Herefordshire [51]

"The work manual at S&A Produce's farms tells workers there will be a jacuzzi and sauna, a gym, and basketball and football area."

I have to say that anyone really thinking that this would be the case at a farm where the job is to pick strawberries, would have to be rather naive.

Hmmm. It's not impossible that these sorts of facilities could be provided. A simple hot tub and cupboard sauna, bike machine, dumbells plus a yard with a net hoop would do the job as far as the discription goes. Giving people flase expectations is a different matter

I very much hope that the reasons why these guys did what they did is not connected to any bad experiences that happened to them here

Absolutely

I hope the company feel suitably ashamed.

If their employers are in anyway to blame then I hope they suffer more than shame

An update from the horses mouth

There were actually 3 deaths connected to the farm in this time period - 1 guy hung himself, 1 guy was stabbed and 1 guy was kicked to death in Birmingham

The police are saying very little at this stage and speculation is rife - the farm is largely run/controlled by Latvians and Lithuanians and there is talk of a mafia connection. A number of Eastern European British embassies are sending members of staff to investigate possible organised crime connections

As for the sauna, gym etc - the farm does have various bits and pieces like this and is apparently well equi[pped

Love / BLACK GUYS POLISH WOMEN [809]

Perhaps because of the obvious discomfort this type of relationship causes to some. A topical subject and will probably be an interesting programme

Life / New skyscraper in Warsaw... [58]

The towers in Gdynia do look good and the location is great. But there have been big problems with construction and it is rumoured that they have shifted 10cms at the foundations
