Hi,
My name is Talila, my mother's family comes from Eastern Galicia. As a child I heard much Polish and many beautiful stories about life in Poland before the war. Although I never visited Poland I feel a special bond to it.

I visit this site hoping to find info about my grandmother's cousin, Polish poet Leon Pasternak (1910 - 1969).

Leon Pasternak, whose surname means parsnip (a root vegetable), was born in Austrian-occupied Lwów in 1910. A Jewish communist writer, during the inter-war period he belonged to Poland's outlawed Soviet-controlled communist party for which he did time on charges of subversive activities. After Stalin annexed half of Poland in collusion with Hitler in Sept. 1939, Pasternak collaborated with the Soviet occupation forces. A writer, poet and satirist, he used his pen to promte pro-Soviet communist propaganda, unlike his Russian cousin Boris Pasternak (of 'Dr Zhivago' fame), who became disissluioned with communism.

To call Leon Pasternak "collaborator" is not fair.
Leon Pasternak believed in communism with all his heart and served his belief with courage, and also paid the price by being imprisoned.
Leon Pasternak was a man of honour and I am proud of being related to him.

I know that he was related to my grandmother, since she told me that before she came to Israel in 1935, she used to visit in prison a poet cousin of hers, Leon Pasternak, jailed because he wrote communist verses.

I am doing my family tree and will thank for info regarding Leon Pasternak's ancestors from his father's side, since the relationship bonds through my grandmother's mother Regina who was born Pasternak (about 1860 in Russia, Tula).

I don't think that Leon Pasternak was a first cousin since I heard about Regina's father Yosef Pasternak leaving Tula about 1880 (when land leasing was prohibited from Jews) for Galicia with his three daughters, Regina, Augusta and Marie. I do not remember that a son (who could be Leon's father) was ever mentioned.

I will be grateful for info about his paternal ancestry, as well as for advice upon how to obtain such info.

Thank you,
Talila

So what about all those boys and girls, who believed in nazism with all their hearts ?

"So what about all those boys and girls, who believed in nazism with all their hearts"

The GREAT difference is that these youngsters of the Hitler Jugend were joiners and earned by their joining,
Whereas Leon Pasternak was a courageous youngster who swam (in the 1920's) against the current and put himself at risk for his beliefs.

Adi himself and many of his buddies were in German prisons in early 20's.

Grzegorz:

The absurdity of your comparison between Leon Pasternak and "Adi" Hitler speaks for itself.
I, on the other hand, remain speechless.

your comparison between Leon Pasternak and "Adi" Hitler speaks for itself.

Where have I done that ? I only pointed out that nazis weren't always at the top, many of them were imprisoned, so your arguments from #6 are simply incorrect.
