USA450R 1 | 3 6 Feb 2009 / #1Hello,I am going to Poland for the first time in May and trying to find family members there. All I have thus far are names. My Great Grandpa and Grandma were Anthony and Sophie Subik. They were born in Poland around 1875 and 1878. They have 1 son, Egnatius Subik who was born in Poland and 1 daughter Wladyslawa (Lottie) Subik (my Grandma) who was born in Detroit, MI. All are passed away.I think Sophie came to USA around 1905 via boat and Ellis Island and Anthony 1906? I cant find anything at ellisisland.org or much at ancestry.com.Sophie passed away in Detroit, MI in 1963 (January 14th)I also have a letter that I found with my Grandmas belongings. Its in old Russian I think. I think it is a death certificate but do not know name, city, region or anything. I will attach so you can view as well and hopefully assist me.Thanks so much,Matthewmjhobbs@aol.com
jscm400 6 Feb 2009 / #2Hi Matthew,Per 1930 Detroit, MI census, Anthony & Egnatius came to the US in 1907 & Sophie in 1905. Anthony & Sophie are aliens & Engatius has been naturalized. Anthony & Sophie were married abt. 1910 (Sophie is 2nd wife).US records that should/may have Anthony's birth town: complete marriage record, birth/baptismal record for Lottie. Death record: Died 1943 & buried in St. Hedwig Cemetery, Dearborn Heights, Wayne Co., MI (should provide his parents' names too). SS-application (he may have filed)Engatius: complete marriage record, birth/baptismal records for his children, naturalization record, death record (for birthplace & mother's maiden surname), SS-applicationSophie's marriage & death records should have her parents' names & her birth town. Lottie's birth records.Hope this helps.
Syrena 7 | 73 7 Feb 2009 / #4You should check out moikrewni.pl - mapa nazwisk It says there are only 157 in Poland, mostly in the south east. You could see if any are on nasza-klasa.pl there are 77 Subiks on there. Maybe you could get some info that way.
OP USA450R 1 | 3 7 Feb 2009 / #5Thanks. I'll check them out.Ordered death certificate on Great Grandma. I recieved it today. Calicoe 2 | 133 11 Feb 2009 / #6Hi:Your thread caught my attention, because I am somewhat in the same situation. I hope I am not intruding on your thread, but there seems to be very knowledgeable people here who may be able to help me on my search. I am adopted and found my birth mother, but at this point she only has a name and vague origin for the Polish maternal grandmother.Maternal grandmother: Frances Kaputska, from somewhere near the Carpathian Mountains. The maternal grandfather was Hungarian (Andraus Bartok), probably from near the same area.I have no idea when they migrated to the U.S., but by calculating ages, it had to be somewhere right before or after WW1. They settled in East Chicago, Indiana. I am mostly interested in figuring out information about the origins of my maternal grandmother's name in Poland.Thanks.
